Some time ago I got a hp pavilion dm1 1020sa. Of course first thing to do is to get rid of the windows7 and put on it opensuse.
To be precise opensuse 11.3 32bit from the kde4 live cd.

Booting the live cd... by default is a no-no. Use ssb.blacklist=1 option at boot time and everything will be as should be.

The opensource driver of the wireless card is a no-no again (broadcom 4312 :4315, driver b43). It simple disconnects sometimes and only a restart of the network can save you (rcnetwork restart).
Use the packman broadcom-wl package and everything would be much better... actually your wireless will work.

The desktop-effects may not work and make your xserver/kwin to freeze. Do not worry is normal... known bugs in the driver/X11. Use alt+shift+F1...

========================
google now offers a rpm for their plugin. however due to some things that google does not seem to understand you are better to stick with alien workaround
========================

after some waiting finally google chat video/audio work on linux too.

here is what I did to get it working on opensuse 11.3 32 bit.

you should have activated the packman and the contrib repo

sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/11.3:/Contrib/standard/ Contrib

from packman install libopenssl0_9_8 (it is in oss, I had some mushrooms for breakfast that day, the only explanation I may find for the wrong packman reference)

sudo zypper in libopenssl0_9_8

from contrib install alien

sudo zypper in alien

from the google webpage...

Is true... I got a mac book pro 7,1 the 13.3 inch... why it has an anti-idiot device, that prevents it being killed by falls assisted by power cord stumbling. In the 13.3" class was the cheapest too for a decent processor..
Now the perils of putting linux on it.
Just followed the guide...

standard refit and diskutil, boot from cdrom/dvd only no luck with the usb.
Got a recent opensuse kde live cd, I used kde reloaded 4.5.2 64 bit as it already has the kernel patches into it that allows linux to run.

It installed decently... first reboot was the first problem as it will freeze... but do not worry that is ok just wait few minutes and then hard reset it it should start. It seems to be an issue with the last signal that does the hardware reset not ...

opensource movement is everywhere nowadays. It left the garage of the passionate amateurs and big companies founded their business plans around it few years ago. Even public sector started to adopt it, famous being the example of City of Munich migration to a debian spinoff.
Up to know two major actors you had in the playground...
* the coders they write their projects and they simply share them with the others, they are absolute gods when comes to features the main motto is WYSIWYG if you want more code it.
* the businesses sponsored projects. They were a good force behind some projects ubuntu (Cannonical), Fedora (redhat), opensuse (Novell), openoffice when their agenda corresponded with the one of the users but bad in others the best examp...
