Beyond the practicalities what is the use of Memory?

Ah when the music meets the ear
And forms the join from far to near
From deep within the simmered pot
Of all forgot and unforgot
Brings forth the thoughts of that which was
On further to our own because
Though fairytales of dragon fire
The mermaid song and chieftains pyre
The brave old world before the oil
Of man and beast and honest toil
Of gold an jewels across the sea
Of slaving ships and gallows tree
You dressed in green

Those memories all and twist swirl
Like smoke they shift and ferns uncurl
Into the present wheel they spin
The curve gets steep the air gets thin
The stakes increase in thickened time
As chaos skews the ancient...
